Amores Perros (2 hours 35 minutes)
This is a Spanish film that links three different stories to one car crash in Mexico City. The three stories contain a teenager who lives in the rough parts of town and is involved in dog fighting, an injured model whose hurt legs prevents her from working, and a hit man whose strange presence raises unanswered questions. Though the characters are only brought together briefly by the car accident, they each play a significant role in adding to the theme of the film. In the first part, the teenager, Octavio, becomes involved in dog fighting to try and raise money so that he can run away with his sister-in-law whom he is in love with, despite her rough marriage to his brother, Ramiro. Later, in a car chase with his main opponent, Jarocho, there is a collision. Valeria is a model who lives with Daniel, her lover and a successful magazine publisher. However, during the car accident caused by Octavio and Jarocho, Valeria severely injures her leg which creates tension between her and Daniel. Later, Valeria's leg is amputated, removing any chance of her return to modelling. The third segment follows a professional hit man, El Chivo, who happened to be close by when the car accident happened. He steals Octavio's money and brings Cofi, Octavio's notoriously violent dog, home to nurse him back to health. Although Cofi kills all the other dogs in El Chivo's home, El Chivo forgives him, seeing this violence as a reflection of his own. The purpose of this film was to explore the harsh realities of Mexico City, as well as humanity. These include inequality, violence, and disloyalty.
